SUMMARY:Pomo Culture Series – Papa Quail Pomo Basket Project
DESCRIPTION:Soper Reese Theatre is proud to host the\nPomo Culture Series\nFriday, August 21, 2026 – 6 PM\nFREE ENTRY\nDonations gratefully accepted\nPapa Quail Pomo Basket Project\nForty years ago, I did my dissertation on Pomo\nBaskets. In the process I photographed 1200 baskets\nfrom major museums and private collections where I\nknew the village the baskets came from, and in some\ncases the names of the weavers. These photos\nfocused on the Pomo baskets but also included\nsurrounding tribes. The baskets ranged from the late\n1800s to the 1980s. I also got to work with weavers\nsuch as Mabel McKay and Elsie Allen. Now that I have\nretired from Fresno State, I am returning to this\nresearch to digitize these photos. I would like to\nreturn this resource to the weaving communities –\nlong overdue. While it is not the same as returning the\nbaskets themselves, at least these photos can\nbecome a resource. I would also be happy to mentor\ntribal scholars on their own research with this data\nbase to further their academic careers.
